Did you know that some of your hair habits are probably making you look older than you are? It’s true! This time, on the TouchUp’s Beauty Blog, we’ll go over 8 common hair mistakes that age you, and easy ways to fix them! Your hair is the accessory that you wear all day, every day, so it stands to reason that the way your hair looks affects the rest of your appearance!
If we allow ourselves to fall into a certain routine for too long, we may end up aging ourselves, so it’s good to take risks and make changes!
#1. The first big mistake we make is assuming that long hair always makes us look younger. Long hair tends to hide the details of one’s face, and important facial features like the lips, nose, and smile are important to show off! Proportion between hair length and face shape is absolutely necessary. As you age, your face-shape changes, and so it is SUPER important to adjust your hairstyle to your face-shape every so often. Your beauty is accentuated by age; don’t hide behind the long hair!
Now I know what you’re thinking. If I cut my hair off, I will look just like my mom and that is not true! A great hairstylist like one of the team members at TouchUps Salon can do so much more than chop your mop. They can use your exact features, hair density, growth pattern and likes and dislikes to craft you a style that not only reduces your appearance of age-related issues but also is easy to do!
#2. The second mistake is picking a haircut that isn’t necessarily flattering for you. Ask your hairstylist about what they think would look great on you! Say “NO” to one-length haircuts, and maybe add some face-framing layers to your style.
The key face shapes are:

- Round
- Oval
- Square
- Rectangle
- Oblong
- Diamond
- Heart
- Triangle
- Inverted triangle
Each one of these has one or two specific remedies that an experienced and well taught hairstylist will be able to help you find to compliment the appearance of your hair without aging you.
#3. Color is everything! Going too dark or too light can really make you appear older. Your hair color should complement your skin tone, as well as your personality!
As the grey/white hairs begin to set in consider upgrading from a demi permanent cover up type color to something more permanent such as the Davines Mask with VibraChrom we use at TouchUps Salon. It is an opaquer finish over the grey hairs which simply means that they won’t be popping back up until they grow back in.
Along with permanent color if your grey is high percentage 50% or more

consider lightening your base color level. This is the color that the stylist uses to cover your grey hair before highlighting or lowlighting over it. Here is a great post of some color options from AARP. If your grey hair is showing back up in just a few days it’s time to go a shade or two lighter in order to decrease the contrast between the grey and your colored hair. This line between the two is called the line of demarcation and is a tell-tale sign of you coloring your hair! No thank you!
If you cannot be bothered with lightening your favorite all over color get some highlights from your hairstylist ! It will not only help you feel younger because of the brightness and fun it will also soften any features by drawing the eyes of others up to your hair instead of your skin.

#4. The way you part your hair changes a lot of your look! Bangs can add a youthful element to your style, but not everyone can rock the bangs. This is another area where the expert stylists at TouchUps can come to the rescue! Face shape, hair density, growth patterns, styling and texture all come into play when it comes to great looking bangs. Maybe you love your bangs but have been getting them cut the same way for 15 years. Update sister! A great stylist can show you a few new looks and counsel you on how to quickly and easily style them.

#5. Don’t over-do the volume. Talk to your hairstylist about the ways you like to wear your hair, and about what products are right for you. Here at TouchUps, we use styling products from lines like More Inside by Davines; and they have something for everyone!
Remember friends, it’s not about what someone else has that looks good. It is about what hairstyles look best on you and your hair. We absolutely hear the stories, complaints and justifications for hair that is not appealing on our clients. Trust us, we do not want to cut your hair or style it differently for our sakes. We make those suggestions simply our a professional desire to help you ladies look amazing!

All of us have been stuck in the styling rut, just like the color rut. Sometimes it’s breaking through those old habits and looks where we can truly release ourselves to become a newer version of ourselves.
#6. The shampoo you’re using may be killing your hair! Shampoo that is labeled as “for normal hair types” does not favor aging hair. Try products that are tailored to your hair habits! If you color your hair regularly, use color safe shampoo and conditioner. Do you struggle with frizzy hair? Try an anti-frizz shampoo like the Love Smoothing shampoo from Davines.
Got dried out hair the Momo Shampoo or Well Being Shampoo from Davines is amazing!
If you like to blow dry your hair, or you use a flat iron or curling iron regularly, use products that protect your hair against heat, like the Melu Hair Shield, to prevent damaging your hair!
#6. What’s your damage?! If you walk around with split ends, unkempt extensions, or chemically damaged hair, that will make you look older! Counteract it by getting regular haircuts to get rid of split ends, make appointments to have a stylist take care of your extensions, and use a deep conditioner like the Nounou Hair Mask once a week if you have heavily processed hair.
We have all been at the store and seen that woman who is holding onto the last bit of her scraggly length. Cut it! At least get it cleaned up, so it isn’t so thin looking. If you cannot trust your hairstylist enough to just take a little bit off to help the growing out process you may need a new stylist. Just saying….
#7. Lastly, makeup and hair are a perfect pair! If you put too much makeup on, that can age your severely. A low-maintenance hairstyle is paired well with someone who is low maintenance in their makeup regimen!

Are you the opposite? Do you love getting dolled up every single day? Then hit it hard it the styling of your hair! One of our favorite clients like a short and spicy cut and she dresses it up with a phenomenal face of makeup and an even better outfit. She not only looks way younger, but she has helped boost her confidence in the overly perfect social media generation. Go get it girl.
