There comes a point for almost everyone where coloring and covering up your grays becomes tiresome. (Why do we get grey hair, anyway?!) Coming into the salon once a month just to get your roots done can feel tedious, we know! Whether you color your own hair or frequent a salon, covering those grays can get expensive. The best solution is to embrace your grays!
This will take a lot of patience, just like growing out a short hairstyle. There are lots of options when it comes to starting to embrace your new natural shade, and finding the process that keeps you feeling great is key to successfully growing out your gray hair!

The First Step: Look at Your Options.
Consider going lighter.
A great way to speed up the process of growing out your silvery locks is to lighten your hair or add some highlights! Going a little bit lighter will make your grays a lot harder to notice, as the gray hairs will blend in with the blondes! In addition to going lighter, temporary color is a great option as it will be gentler on your hair and mask the transition phases.
Chop it ALL off!
If you’re comfortable with having short hair, the fastest way to grow out your gray hair is to chop everything else off! I know that it sounds scary, but it’s true! The more you cut, the less colored hair remains. I had to endure the same process as I want from a platinum pixie cut back to my natural color, and although it took time, it was definitely worth it. The other option is to shave your head, which is a little bit more extreme then getting a pixie cut, but it’s definitely the fastest way to grow out your gray!
Try a Root Concealer Spray.
If you just need a temporary way to cover your grays on days of important events, etc., then a root spray may be the way to go. Root spray is inexpensive, immediate, and effective! At TouchUps, we recommend using the Style Edit Root Concealers.

Consider Getting a Color Correction!
A color correction might be able to save you from the months of watching your greys slowly take over, but it will be a drastic change all at once! (If you’re not familiar with the term “color correction“, check out our explanation here!) A color correction is BY FAR the most expensive solution to the grey hair problem, but it might be worth it for you.
This would mean that your stylist would color your hair, but instead of covering up your grey hair, your stylist would make your grey more prominent. Essentially, you’d get grey highlights to make your grow-out process a little bit more natural looking! Color corrections can take hours, and generally stylists charge by the hour for them. Before scheduling an appointment, be sure to sit down and talk with your stylist and get the details of the process.
To keep the yellow tones from creeping back into your hair after your color correction, invest in a purple shampoo. The purple shampoo will keep your highlights that ashy-grey tone that makes your grey roots blend in, and it will keep you from having to come into the salon for toner frequently! I highly recommend this purple shampoo from Amika. (You can find it on Amazon, or at a local beauty supply store.)
The Second Step: Choose Your Fate!
There are lots of factors when it comes to growing out your grey…
The best choice you can possibly make when it comes to your hair is always the choice that results in you feeling your best! Whether you choose to go for the color correction or a pixie cut, it’s important that you get to look in the mirror and think that you’re beautiful afterwards. No matter what! (Yes, I would absolutely still tell you that you’re gorgeous a shaved head.)

I wish that growing out dyed hair were an easier process, but unfortunately, there is only so much we can do. On the bright side, grey hair has been one of the most popular trending looks in the past 2 years! (You don’t want to know how many young women come into the salon every week wanting to have silver hair just like in the above picture.) I know that embracing the grey hair can be difficult, but it’s a part of you; therefore, grey hair is gorgeous!
