That bothersome frizzy hair is a problem that we all constantly wage a battle against, there are so many different factors to consider that it can be hard to know where to start! The most notable culprit leading to that evil frizz is dry hair! When your hair lacks moisture, the cuticle becomes rough and it starts to take in moisture from the air causing it to swell and create that frizz we are all familiar with! The hair cuticle is the outermost layer of the hair strand, this part is what gives the hair its strength and protection! This layer is very important for the feel and styling of your hair. To get frizz free hair we need to keep the cuticle strong, healthy and moisturized! In order to do this we need to make sure that we are on a healthy moisturizing routine, using the proper products, and not unintentionally damaging our hair!
Choosing The Proper Products

If you struggle with frizzy hair, a good place to start fixing that issue is in your hair product. Its always helpful to look for products that advertise anti frizz, but you might want to start buying products for what is not in them. Try to avoid purchasing products that contain sulfates or alcohol! Sulfates are most often a strong detergent added to shampoos, so that is the best place to start eliminating sulfates! They have a nasty habit of actually stripping your hair of natural oils, on top of drying your hair out! There are many brands that make sulfate free shampoos and conditioners such as OGX, Aveda, and our personal favorite, Davines Dede Shampoo! Alcohol is a real nasty customer because it actively steals moisture from your hair, leaving it brittle and encouraging frizz. A very effective way to combat this is to use hair oils and styling creams to keep that moisture in your hair where it needs to be! this keeps your hair shiny and frizz free! The best oils for fighting frizzy hair are macadamia and argan oil!
A Healthy Moisturizing Routine

If you are constantly fighting an unruly, frizzy head of hair, a good moisturizing routine is the best choice! Using a true hair treatment like Olaplex No. 3 or a deep conditioner will help lock in that moisture and help keep your hair healthy, shiny, and frizz free! Using Olaplex No.3 as a how to example, you want to put a generous amount from the roots to the ends on unwashed towel dry hair. Next you should come it through once and leave it in for a minimum of 10 minutes. Then just rinse it out, shampoo and condition! This helps give your hair the salon healing experience! Keeping your hair moisturized is the main way to mitigate that troublesome frizz and give it that illustrious shine! It is also highly recommended to use a leave in conditioner once a week to add even more moisture and protection to your luscious locks!
How To Avoid Damage

Surprisingly, there are many actions that are normalized for hair styling or care that may contribute to dry frizzy hair! Over styling with hot tools, over brushing, and even towel drying can cause damage to your hair dry it out! Not being careful with hot tools can be a truly damaging decision when it comes to your hair. The heat breaks down the protective barrier on your hair and strips away moisture, which as we know, leads to frizz. Using a hair shield product or protective spray is always recommended when using hot tools. These products add a barrier between your hair and the tool, preventing damage and retaining moisture while styling! Melu Hair Shield is one we personally use here at TouchUps Salon! It is also a smart idea to use a lower setting on your hot tools and to minimize their use. In the case of a blow dryer it is recommended to let your hair mostly air dry and then use the blow dryer to style if needed! On another note, when you brush your hair, it is best to make sure that you are being gentle and not just ripping through your hair to get out those pesky tangles. Being to aggressive can severely damage your hair and disrupt the cuticle, leading to frizz. To best avoid tugging damage, when your hair is wet, just simply rake some styling product through it and then leave it alone! Towel drying poses a smaller threat than the others, but if you want to prevent frizz at every step, try blotting your hair dry and then let it air dry! This prevents the damage caused by roughing up the cuticle!
