Are you concerned about the health of your locks? Do you think you’re shedding a little too much for comfort? Never fear, TouchUps Salon is here! This week, we’ve got seven tips for you on how to ensure your hair is happy and healthy, 24/7.
#1.) You Experience Minimal Shedding.
Be it in the shower, in your brush or comb, or on your bedding, it’s important to pay attention to how much you’re shedding. It’s perfectly natural to shed, but it’s essential that you know how much shedding is too much. The healthiest amount of shedding is approximately 80 strands per day! So, if you’re only seeing a small handful of strands per day, you’re on the right track!
#2.) Your Hair has a Smooth Texture.
Nobody wants to get got in a tangled mess when they run their fingers through their hair! Healthy hair should never feel brittle and dry, but smooth and hydrated. Typically, if you have long hair that means it’s growing out healthily, but it is possible to have long, damaged hair if you color it too often. So pay attention to the feel of those locks!
#3.) Your Hair Responds Well to Moisture.
Humid weather can be very informative about the condition of our hair. If your hair is damaged, it will respond to humidity but frizzing. When hair is overly porous, it loses it’s ability to stand up to humidity all together! Healthy hair should respond to moisture by retain its natural texture; if your hair is curly, it should remain curly, and if its naturally straight, it should remain straight.
#4.) No Dandruff!
In terms of hair goals, dandruff should always be a no-no! Dandruff is caused by a build up of a yeast-like fungus, called Malassezia globosa, around your hair follicles, and is treatment with a shampoo that contains zinc pyrithione or selenium sulfide. These shampoos won’t cure you of dandruff, but they will slow the rate at which the skin cells on your scalp flake off. Dandruff is NOT caused by washing excessively, but don’t wash your hair too much, as that damages your strands in other ways.
#5.) You Experience Very Little Breakage.
Breakage is BAD. By bleaching your hair too often, you can cause your hair to become extremely brittle and dry, and it will break apart with little to no pressure. Typically, you should be able to give your hair a bit of a tug and have it revert back to it’s natural form. If you’re experiencing breakage, slow down on the hair color, and treat yourself to a deep conditioning treatment.
#6.) Shiny Hair!!!
Healthy hair should naturally have lots of shine, without being drenched in oil. Shiny hair indicates that your hair cuticles are lying flat, as they should, and allowing the light to bounce off of them! Damaged hair will appear extremely dull, but this can be helped by using deep conditioners, leave-in conditioners, and oils. (Like these!)
#7.) Your Hair Should Naturally Repel Water.
A good test to see if your hair is healthy or not would be to place a few strands of it into a bowl of water. I know, it sounds strange, but it works! If your hair is healthy, it will float, indicating that the cuticles are closed and will not easily absorb water. If your strands sink, this is an indication that the cuticles are open and exposed tot he elements. How quickly your hair dries is also an indication of the health of your locks. If your hair takes an usually long time to dry, that could be a sign that it is overly porous and over-processed.
