Hi everyone! This week on the TouchUps Beauty Blog, we wanted to give a shout out to all of our curly girls out there. We know that maintaining your curly locks is sometimes extremely difficult, so we did a little bit of research to put together a short list of tips that might help! Everyone’s curls are different, and finding the right products that work for your hair is extremely important. Next time you go in for a haircut or color, ask your stylist what they might recommend. So, don’t give in and go for that straightener just yet! Your curls are beautiful and unique, and we want to help you wear your natural texture with confidence. With that, let’s dive in!
1.- No Touchy!!!
Try to avoid touching your hair too often. Touching your hair a lot can cause your curls to dry out and start feeling brittle. When you’re applying product, scrunch it about three times and then let the curls rest. Over the course of your day, your hands accumulate lots of foreign dirt an oils that can dry out your hair by removing the natural oils that keep your hair hydrated and healthy. These new oils and dirts can also cause build-up on your scalp, which will keep your hair from growing like it should! So, as much as we all think your curls are beautiful and fun to play with… no touchy-touchy!
2.- Silk = Stunning Curls.
Sleeping on a cotton pillowcase can create a lot of friction on your hair while you sleep, which leads to frizz and static in the morning. A silk or satin pillowcase eliminates friction by allowing your hair to glide easily over it throughout the night, preventing your curls from getting frizzy. You can order a silk pillowcase like this one off of Amazon for as little as $9!
3.- Use Sulfate-Free Products.
Luscious curls begin in the shower, using products that are as free of sulfates as possible. Products that contain a large amount of chemicals strip your hair of its natural oils which naturally prevent frizz and damage. Try using the Love Curl shampoo and conditioner from Davines to help hydrate your curls without removing natural oils! The Love Curl line is full of products that are formulated with almond extract for nourishment and control, making the line of products perfect for any curl type. (You can check out the line here at our hair salon in Chandler! Schedule an appointment today and ask your stylist to use products from the line in your hair!)
4.- No Brushing Wet Hair!
It’s better to use a wide-tooth comb, like this one, to detangle your wet curls than a brush. Brushing your hair when it’s wet damages the cuticle, which leads to breakage and split ends. (Brushing hair when it’s wet can cause breakage for all hair types.) Try using a detangling leave-in conditioner, too! That make it easier to comb out the tangles without damaging your hair.
5.- Use Heat Protection!
Heat from hair dryers, flat irons, and other hot tools can leave your strands frayed and dry. Try using a leave-in conditioner or a heat protectant like the Melu Hair Shield or Blow Dry Primer before using your hot tools to prevent damage! We use these products everyday in our hair salon, and our clients love it!
6.- Don’t Towel Dry.
If you have curly hair, it’s best to let it hair dry, or use a diffuser. Using terry cloth towels and roughing up your curls to try and dry them can cause unneeded frizz, and possibly breakage. If you’re in a rush, try using a microfiber towel and scrunching your curls to dry them.
Thanks for reading these tips, and we hope you find them to be helpful! Take care of those curly locks, and rock that natural texture, girl!!! If you’d like to learn more hair tips and tricks, check out our other posts here!
