Hey everyone! Christine here again!
As we dip our toes further into 2021, the weather is starting to warm up. Warmer weather means more care-free days outdoors, more well-needed sunshine, and a whole new host of elements that can totally wreak havoc on your hair.
That’s why implementing a proper summer hair care routine is paramount. You will want to protect both your strands AND your style! But knowing how is always the first step. Allow me to share my tips with you to combat the hair dangers of heat, humidity, pool chemicals, and the salty ocean water alike!

Conditioning is Key
Just like the rest of our body, your hair craves moisture in the heat! In order to give your hair some much-needed refreshment, be sure to invest in some moisture rich shampoo, conditioner, and some hair oil or serums on your ends! Picking the right one for your hair will help those parched locks immensely. Products like the NaturalTech Well-Being Shampoo and the NaturalTech Well-Being Conditioner will help you to get that extra moisture boost. If your hair needs even more help, its wise to look at doing some conditioning and repair treatments at your local salon! Here at TouchUps, we offer some amazing treatments that you can add into any appointment that strengthen and protect your hair from the oncoming heat waves. Typically, we will invite our guests to try out our Olaplex treatment, and our brand new LOREAL Powermix treatments that are custom-made to help with your specific hair needs!
Avoid Excess Heat
There is already enough heat attacking your hair as you walk outside. No need to over-do it by blowdrying and using a curling iron daily. Ditch the hair appliances for a while and instead opt for good ol’ fashioned air drying! If you use a microfiber towel to blot your hair dry after a shower, this can prevent the almighty frizz from taking over as well. If you’re nervous about style though, try putting your hair into a braid while it’s still wet and take them out after a while to enjoy the natural waves they create!

Wash Less Often
While it may seem like you’d want to wash your hair MORE when it’s hot and humid, it can actually be worse for it! Washing too often, especially in the summer months, can strip your scalp and locks of its much-needed natural oils. You can always extend your time between washed by using a dry shampoo! We typically use a myriad of dry shampoos at our salon, and we always love how it eliminates grease and adds texture! Washing less often is also going to protect your color, as is protecting it from the sun with hats and scarves.
Don’t Skip A Trim
As your hair gets drier, your ends will be more likely to split! As I’m sure you know, split ends can make your hair not only look ragged and frizzy but can showcase any damage your hair is undertaking. We will always recommend getting regular haircuts to maintain hair health during any season, but we find it’s most important during the summer! Cutting your hair consistently can also help with any built-up heat damage, getting rid of the unhealthy strands and making way for your new moisturized hair.
Keep in mind, some of these rules may change depending on how summer is where you live. So it’s always best to talk with YOUR stylist to see what they recommend for your hair! However, it’s never a bad idea to keep an eye on hair health. Check out our blog on Stopping Hair Damage for more information on keeping your hair healthy!
