You’ve heard it all before, right? “I want mermaid hair! I wish I had thick hair like her. I can never get my hair to look like that!” If I had a dollar for every time I heard statements like that from clients in our hair salon… I’d be a very rich lady. Having healthy, voluminous hair is something that everyone dreams of, and it can affect our self-confidence. If you’re dealing with So! In this week’s edition of the TouchUp’s Beauty Blog, we’ll be talking about tips you can use to increase your hair’s volume and diversify your style. *cheerleader voice* Ready? Okay!
1.- Dry Your Hair From Below!
An easy way to give your style more volume is by using your normal hair dryer! Try lowering your head so that your hair hangs in your face, and dry your hair from roots to ends. You can also try drying as you normally would, but lift your hair up so that your roots stand up vertically, and dry from roots to ends that way!
2.- Massage Your Scalp.
Treat your scalp to a lovely massage a few times a week, and that will help stimulate new hair growth! If you use a deep conditioner like Olaplex or the Keratin Infusion, we recommend giving yourself a scalp massage while you apply the conditioner. Scalp massages help spread your hair’s natural oils, enhance blood circulation, strengthen your roots, and promote sound sleep and relaxation; so give it a try! #treatyoscalp
3.- Use Sulfate-Free Shampoo.
Shampoos and conditioners that contain harsh chemicals can cause damage to your strands, making your hair dull and thin. If you use high-quality products with natural ingredients, I PROMISE you will see the health of your hair improve. We love the Nounou Shampoo and conditioner by Davines because it’s full of natural ingredients, and it is designed to nourish dry, brittle hair.
4.- Try a Volume Boosting Shampoo and Conditioner.
Here at our salon location in Chandler, AZ, we carry a shampoo that is specifically designed to give you more volume; Volu, from Davines! There is also a Volu Hair Mist that you can spray into damp hair before blow drying. You can find many different volumizing hair products, so try them out and see what works for you!
5.- Use a Dry Shampoo.
Dry shampoo is great for keeping the grease away in between washing your hair, but did you know it can help give your hair volume and texture too? Try spraying some dry shampoo, like Perk Up by Amika, on your dry roots before going to bed, and in the morning, you’ll wake up with voluminous roots!
6.- Easy on the Towel Drying!
Drying your hair with a towel is great, but try not to be rough with your hair when you do. We recommend using a microfiber towel, and dabbing your hair dry instead of rubbing your hair with a rougher cotton towel. This will prevent breakage, and thereby hair loss!
7. Play with Your Hair Length!
Most stylists would agree that the optimal hair length is no longer than just past your shoulders. Why is that? Shorter hairstyles like the one shown above give the impression of more volume, and they’re sometimes easier to style! If you have to choose between length and volume in your hairstyle, volume is always the better choice.
8.- Try Parting Your Hair Differently
An easy step to adding volume to your hairstyle is parting your hair differently! There are so many ways to part your strands, so play around and see what you like best! A side part will give you much more volume than parting your hair down the middle, but you can also try zig-zags or not parting it at all!
9.- Add Layers to Your Cut!
Cuts with lots of layers or fringe, much like shorter cuts, give the impression of greater volume. The real advantage of cuts like the picture above is that they work for virtually every face shape and hair type! Adding layers is not quite as big a commitment as going shorter, so it’s a great way to try something new without worrying about having to worry about it being too big a change. Ask your stylist what they think would work best for you!
10.- Eat Your Greens!
Like my mom always said, “You are what you eat!” Eating leafy greens will provide your skin, hair, and nails everything they need to be strong and healthy. Foods that are rich in biotin, omega 6, omega 9, vitamin e, vitamin c, vitamin k, iron, calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, and keratin will especially help keep your hair full and luscious.
